In need of a new activity for your baby or toddler before you both start climbing the walls?

toddler friendly melbourne activities

Having a toddler ourselves these are some of our favourite hangouts when the park just won't do it anymore!

Some of them are free, some of them are reasonably priced but none of them should break the bank.

COLLINGWOOD CHILDREN'S FARM

A really great half day adventure, fresh air, grassy paddocks and only minutes from the city. The Collingwood Children's Farm is a little slice of country life right in the heart of Melbourne, only 4 kilometres from the CBD. It's a magical adventure for city kids to delight in farm life, hang out with the ducks, pat the goats, bottle feed the baby lambs and milk the cows.

Family Day is the First Sunday of every month where you'll find hay rides and pony rides, a BBQ and kids activities.

We like venturing to the farm when the farmer's market is on (second Saturday of each month from 8am - 1pm), only $2.00 entry and that gets you all day access to the farm too.

STORYTIME FOR PRESCHOOLERS AT THE STATE LIBRARY OF VICTORIA

Storytime here caters to the 2 - 5 year olds. Toddlers will dig the rhymes, stories, songs and activities. The great thing about storytime is you don't need to book, it's free, it will be a new experience from your local library and when you're done the kids can explore the Play Pod where you can decorate a Ned Kelly helmet, pick from a huge selection of children's stories, and enjoy the interactive 'Elicit' display. If you have older kids they'll love the chess and interactive games console.

Storytime is held on a Wednesday, not every Wednesday though, so you'll need to check the website before planning your visit.

The all new Play Pod for Families has opened and is a welcoming space to play, dream and cosy up with a good book and away from the hustle and bustle of the City.

KEEPER KIDS AT THE MELBOURNE ZOO

Opened in March 2012 in what used to be a tearoom, Keeper Kids is spacious, light, colourful and very appealling. It's divided into sections. Just as you may find at your local kinder/childcare there's different 'stations' to move about and discover. Whether you want to bandage an animals paw, play shop, add foliage, dress-up and role play or simply chill out in the reading zone, it's all covered and carefully thought out. From the parent/carer zone in the middle of the room to the smooth edges, you'll only find happy chatter here. There's also a  section named 'Works' within Keeper Kids. And for when the outdoors are calling, Growing Wild is perfect to let loose!

HABITOTS, ALBERT PARK

Right in the heart of Albert Park Village, Habitots has opened its doors and it's a welcoming space for families in Melbourne.

This highly anticipated creative hub will be in much demand in Port Phillip where there's too few spaces for families to eat, shop, play and explore all under the one roof!

Indoors there's a neatly tucked little nook under the stairs with some toys and books to enjoy or the party room has a super set up of toys and comfy chairs to watch over your kids while they're busy at play.

Head out the back and you're rewarded with an open family-friendly space. The faux grass is a neat addition to let baby crawl around on and the sandpit and cubby house are the perfect addition to this beautifully presented all-in-one package that is Habitots. You can even bring your own take-away coffee.

PLAY CENTRAL, PORT MELBOURNE

This play centre will welcome your toddler with open arms as they've taken 'play' to a whole other level with a big section of the centre dedicated to toddlers.

Play Central is divided into 'fun zones' including a vibrant baby/toddler area, a climb and slide volcano, dodgem cars (fully fenced), a jungle gym typical of all centres (except this one is massive - ball pit and ball shooters, a super slide and twisty slide, trampoline, climbing frame etc) and what sets this centre apart from the rest is the large sensory area full to the brim with things to do - a reading nook, a pretend supermarket complete with trolleys/cash registers/shopping bags/food items, a home area, a construction zone, soft toys, building blocks, duplo, doll cots, dress-ups and so much more. It's an area to explore and use your imagination.
