We're always surprised when we come across people who have yet to fill their iPhone/iPad with apps. The most often cited excuse? Not enough time to sift through 300,000 apps to find the good ones. Fair enough!
There are some great ones out there for kiddos (and big kids!) of all ages. A perfect remedy for boredom, delayed flights, cafe hopping, train/tram/car trips or just out and about in general. If you're planning a road trip with your family, you might want to load up on apps—not just for your kids—but for you too.
Here's some of our favourites...
HIPSTAMATIC: Scores of photography titles are in the App Store. Many are terrific, but not one matches Hipstamatic's blend of simplicity, serendipity and art. At heart, the app is a filter that will unpredictably saturate, blur or discolor your images, among other things. The results are always surprising and often stunning. Add packs of lenses and film effects for next to nix.
Pic Out A Place (Shapes): What shape is that? Kids will learn about shapes while having lots of fun with this iphone app. It's colorful, interactive and educational.
Toddler Chef: Discover you inner Master Chef. Become a Master Chef for your toddler and make meal time a pleasure. This app contains a wide variety of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert.
Many of the recipes are suitable for family meals.
Disney Fairies Fly: If watching one of the three Tinkerbell movies over and over simply isn't enough Tink for your pixie-lover, here's your fairy-laden solution! Tilting of an iDevice allows your child to guide a chosen fairy through a beautifully rendered Pixie Hollow, collecting treasures and avoiding obstacles.
The Pianist: Transform your iPhone into an 88-key piano for your little Mozart. Realistic graphics feature 3D keys that depress as you touch them. And when the magnum opus is ready, your kids can record it, overdub it as many times as they want, and play it back for adoring fans.
Scribble Lite: Turn your iPhone into a miniature sketch pad. Draw your masterpiece, then shake to erase. With tons of colors, pen sizes, and draw-on photo options, the possibilities are endless. Equally appealing: the excuse to shake an iPhone violently.
Alphabet Animals: Perfect for your talented toddler, this game is packed with colorful animations, animal sounds, and tons of tips for learning their letters. The digital flash cards are interactive, with animals that talk them through every letter of the alphabet.
Checkers: Everyone loves to play checkers, and now you can play on your iPhone. Tap once to select a checker, tap again to move it. So simple, and kids can play alone or against a sibling.
Freshwater Aquarium: Something fishy has found its way to the small screen. This application turns your iPhone into a freshwater haven for 19 species of fish. Tots can feed them and watch them grow, or play eye-spy, turning this aquarium into an exciting -- yet quiet -- distraction.
Wacky Safari: We dig this collection of crazy safari games. With zany sounds from wild animals, and fun facts disguised as jokes, it'll keep toddlers giggling and teach them a little something as they mix and match animal photos.
Oliver Jeffers: Oliver Jeffers' very cool and magical interactive picture book The Heart and the Bottle iPad application like you've never seen before.
