Parks & Playgrounds Kids Activities Melbourne
We used to frequent this little park after a trip to the South Melbourne Market because of its close proximity. To say it was in need of a desperate overhaul was an understatement.
After a little closure, we're thrilled to say the re-vamped Lyell Iffla Reserve in South Melbourne has opened for play and it's a winner.
At first glance you'll think you're entering a natural wonderland. Old gums, wattle trees, tree stumps as stepping stones, rocks, deck seats, a community veggie garden and an abundance of space.
There's a big climbing frame that you need to navigate to reach the top of the space age looking epic silver slide. Perfect for older kids. A stepping stone course winds through the natural setting under the tree canopy and there's a white rock area - perfect sensory experience. Then there's other fun stuff to explore like a basket swing and spinner. One half of the park is tan bark and the other is that squishy soft landing stuff!
You'll adore the large timber aussie animals you can sit on and there's even a fairy toadstall. Other play equipment includes a see-saw and climbing frame.
Picnic benches/seating is plentiful and although there's no special shade covering, you can see how the trees would provide much needed shade but stay away from the slide on those really, really hot days. There's a grassy area that's just perfect to kick a ball about.
It's also almost fully fenced. The fencing is around most of the reserve apart from a very small section where you can enter. 2 Hour parking is also in abundance either on Dorcas Street or side streets. No toilets on site. If you're after coffee, the South Melbourne Market is within a short walking distance.
It's much more than your average 'swing/slide' park and so much more challenging with an epic slide (one you have to climb up to reach).
