City Sights Kids Activities Melbourne
Pack snacks and get ready to roll! If a trip to the the City is on the cards, we have a few ideas and tips so your day will be plain sailing and it won't be in danger of going pear shaped.
If you're not catching the train (or tram) to Flinders Street, parking is affordable and totally do-able at the Royal Botanic Gardens or along St Kilda Road.
This specific City Guide is achievable in about 4 hours and apart from eats at the cafe, you've done it all for free!
The National Gallery of Victoria International is open 7 days a week and houses the temporary kid-friendly exhibit Fake Food Park. This is a fun and engaging exhibit to pass some time, it's totally free too. Grab a take-away coffee, babycino and treats and head out the back of the NGV. There's plenty of space to stretch those legs, let off steam, enjoy some snacks and in the far left corner there's a climbing sculpture for the kids.
A modern and clean Parent/Infant room is located near the toilets just before the Fake Food Park for Kids exhibit, there's even a small toddler area within the Parent Room. Read our Baby-tested Review.
When you've walked over the bridge from the NGV International make your next mark at Federation Square. Take in the atmosphere, grab some lunch/snacks/coffee, have a run around, bask in the sunshine - there's always something engaging happening at Fed Square.
There's a few kid-friendly activities and events happening right now over Winter and the holidays. Take in a Kids Flick at ACMI - there's always something kid-friendly showing and the beauty of these are they don't go for 2.5 hours! We love dropping in to the free permanent Screen Worlds at ACMI. Play some video games and take in the interactive displays. If you're visiting over the School Holidays always something on that might take your fancy.
Take a gander at the NGV Australia. Most exhibits are free.
A playground in the City...who would have ever imagined! If the kids need to run off steam (and let's face it, what kid doesn't) here is the place to do it. ArtPlay Playground on Birrarung Marr is a short walk at the back of Federation Square along the river. The playground is quite vast and suits all abilities, the littlies will love it as will older children. There's even a disabled swing here. ArtPlay is the creative hub and most workshops require bookings. Some are free, some not so check the website to see if something suits. They have a great under 5's selection available.
After all this playing, eating and discovering I think we can say well done - your outing is done and home-time is calling. We'll be bringing you more City Guides which really are as easy as One, Two...Three! We love the City and there's always something new to explore. Even if you only get to the NGV or Fed Square consider it a successful outing!
