Hello, Sunshine. Embrace the heat with some fun and colourful ways to spend the days so you're not going bonkers. Hit some playful destinations for when the heat has run you out of your house, home or apartment — and mind. But don't despair if you're staying in. We've got cool home ideas covered too.

KEEP YOUR COOL INDOORS

P1020409

- Playcentres. They've all got air-con, the kids can run off steam and it kills a few hours.

- Melbourne Aquarium. Perhaps the illusion of being surrounded by water will make you feel like you're cooling down too! You can easily spend 3 hours here aimlessly wondering and exploring all the different levels.

- Cinema. A few hours at a kids flick, popcorn in hand and you'll forget all about the temperature outdoors. ACMI holds kids flicks, or check out HOYTS JNR. for the latest offerings or Mums with Babies can chill too at a Babes in Arms Session every thursday morning. IMAX Melbourne is another wow place to view films in 3D. V Junior at Southland is another top choice with a slide in the cinema and activities to keep the kids ammused before the show!

- Melbourne Museum and Scienceworks. It might be a heatwave outdoors but indoors it's a cool 22 degrees. With so much to do at both destinations it's an obvious choice.

- Hang out with the cool kids at the NGV International or NGV Australia. There's a designated kids gallery and will add some wow factor to your day.

- The Plum Garland Memorial Playground is a must for when you've exhausted the beach option but still want the sand beneath your toes.

- Swimming Pools. Get wet! The Harold Holt Swim Centre (or your local swimming pool) can provide hours of entertainment.

- Seville Water Park. Cool off and keep ammused. Suitable for little ones who don't know how to swim. Pack a picnic, grab an ice-cream nearby and settle in.

- Bendigo Water World. Home of the iconic Big Bendi Waterslide and a fun, relaxing family entertainment venue set in the midst of a natural ironbark forest.

- Hippo Water Play at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Pack a picnic, a towel and your swimmers. This fun zone is shaded and there's seating for adults. Please give them a phone call first as it's not guaranteed the water play will be switched on everyday.

- Rock Pool fun is available at Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, Beaumaris - a beautiful spot to paddle and enjoy a coffee and bit to eat from the cafe afterwards!

EATS: COOL TREATS

- Homemade Icypoles. Ideas are endless here. Generally whatever you've got on hand could work. Berries, oranges, peaches, yoghurt, kiwi, mangoes etc all work well.

- Watermelon on a stick. Here's a fun twist on the homemade icypole. The kids (and you) will love this.

- Fruit Sticks. Full of colour and good for you. A winner every time. We use cookie cutters to make these even more appealing.

- Frozen Bananas. Smother them with chocolate and sprinkles, they'll go down a treat. They also taste great on their own.

- Icecream. I scream. You scream. We all scream for Icecream. Here's where to hang out in Melbourne.

SUMMER PLAY AT HOME

ice-excavation-2

- Paint the fence. No, not the painting you're thinking. All this involves is a bucket of water and an old paintbrush!

- Plastic Pool. These can be purchased for under $20 at Bunnings. We've got a trusty clam-shell pool that the kids add their bath toys to.

- Giant bubbles. These can only be described as bubble-tastic! Spread some cheer in a big dose around your garden or outdoor area.

- Giant Ice-cubes Excavation. One of the coolest ideas around for hours of play. Freeze a huge ice-cube with toys and watch the kids dig and excavate the toys out.
