Located in the industrial area of Alexandria, this old site has been converted to a restaurant, french style market place and a kid-friendly haven. There's even a little farm animal enclosure with the famous Kevin Bacon pig, goats and chickens. The Grounds is a truly unique venue and experience, and whilst its huge popularity means that weekend waits for a table can exceed an hour or more (so we've heard), there are always other options from the market carts or the BBQ grill and Potting Shed who have a smaller menu and offer treats, juices, milkshakes and coffee.
As a destination The Grounds, and its grounds, also has many facets. They've thought of every little fine detail with beautiful gardens, weekend markets, outdoor seating when the cafe is full, a kids cubby house complete with chalkboard and vintage trike, a huge chess floor which doubles as the school holidays activites area, animal farm, water feature and florist. There's also a children's outdoor cinema that's in the works now.
Aside from the great atmosphere and food, the real touch here is the coffee and it's good, real good. Jack Hanna, AKA 'the youngest barista to ever win a world title', is one of three at the helm of this project, so that the coffee is extraordinary comes as no surprise.
Parking (street and onsite) can be a little challenging, but if you persevere, something appears. There's constant attention from ample parking attendants to make sure everyone gets a space. It's the little things... Or do as we did, jump in a taxi from your hotel.
If you're heading to Sydney, this is one hipster joint you're bound to enjoy, you...and the kids!
