If you're after an easy day trip from Melbourne then the Dandenongs Ranges fits the bill. Only an hour from Melbourne's CBD, the Dandenongs has everything from Skyhigh Mt. Dandenong, the National Rhododendrum Gardens, William Ricketts Sanctuary, picture-perfect views and scenery and now the latest to grace the mountain; Shannon Bennet's Burnham Bakery & Piggery Cafe.

Having just opened in June 2014 this 1930s 23-hectre property – comprising of a greenhouse, cafe, on-site bakery, vegetable gardens, kids play area, lawn bowls and pig enclosure, this space is a modern, slick, warm, inviting, rustic and a beautiful addition to the ranges.

Whether it's the smokey waft when you sit outdoors or the scent of freshly made bread drifting by, you'll want to dig deeper and discover this cafe on your culinary journey. Unfortunately for us we were only after treats and coffee otherwise we could have ordered one of everything!

There's no set children's menu (but we've been informed there's one coming soon) but there are lots of treats on a counter inside and they are very moorish - there's lunchtime pickings such as the Blackmore Wagyu Beef Burger ($12.00), Lobster Roll ($19.00), Charcuterie plate with house pickles ($19.00) and the Veggie Burger ($10.00). The piggy biscuits were perfectly fitting for our children and the coffee and fine cakes, slices and treats we ordered were top notch.

All your favourites are on offer here from Five Senses Coffee, Schulz Organic Milk, Myrtleford Butter to free-range pork and organic flour.

When you're done eating and drinking, the wonderland that is the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens is a sight to be seen and right next door.
